I’m here because I care about charities. And charity too. they’re different, both literally and practically. Charities are organisations, dedicated to a community or cause. Charity is a personal quality, or virtue, conveying benevolent feelings, as in “I act with charity”. One’s charities (i.e. the organisations one supports financially) and one’s charity (i.e. one’s personal feelings of benevolence) can be very different.
But both play a role in defining personal identity. and it’s this idea of defining identity through giving to charities out of personal charity — aka philanthropy — that I want to explore in the next few posts.
